SMARCB1, also known as INI-1, is a tumor suppressor gene that encodes a core subunit of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex. It plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression, controlling cell cycle progression, and maintaining proper cellular differentiation by modulating chromatin structure. Loss of SMARCB1 function is associated with several aggressive malignancies. Nuclear SMARCB1 expression is seen in virtually all normal human tissues and most malignancies but the SMARCB1 gene is often mutated or deleted in malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT), including those arising in the central nervous system, leading to a lack of SMARCB1 expression.
