Glutamine synthetase (GS) converts ammonia and glutamate to glutamine. Glutamine synthetase has multiple metabolic functions. Two of them are detoxification of ammonia, and regulation of glutamate in neurons. Synthesis and catalytic activity of glutamine synthetase are highly regulated.
